just a little note! (again) I read an interview with Keira Knightley regarding Atonement in our news paper, on the question "Who is the best kisser - Orlando Bloom or Johnny Depp?" (the had been talking about Pirates prior to this question.) Dearest Keira answered "James McAvoy!" Of course he is the best kisser! ;)

So I watched Atonement on youtube, since it was just there... I really liked it, but I hated the ending. James was brilliant of course. I have to read the novel now...

Did also watch Mansfield Park and it was just lovely! Loved every bit of it. Especially when Edmund realises that he loves Fanny! :)

You most certainly do have a life Maria and I am really glad that you are sharing this with us!
Thanks for all the updates above.
You HAVE to read atonement! Although I loved the film and adored James as Robbie, the book is fantastic.
I have really been influenced recently by firstly reading mansfield part again and then watching a couple of tv adaptations, including the one that you watched on youtube. I have always considered it my least favoured jane austen novel but now i am not so sure.......

I am currently finishing Emma, again, and have a few choices of reading. I have Mansfield Park, Tom Jones and Udolpho... hmm how do I pick?

I have just watched Northanger Abbey on Masterpiece, PBS. I loved this Catherine (Felicity Jones) very much; it was a good choice but I’m not too sure about Mr. Henry Tilney. He looked too old for the role and I was feeling like there is no chemistry between them. It felt more like an affection of the older brother for his young sister. Anyway, it was a good adaptation and as expected, Andrew Davies did not disappoint me.

I know Team Jane will like this ‘coincidence’ so I have to mention that Catherine’s house is the same one used as Jane’s house in ‘Becoming Jane’: -) I’m pretty sure that I’m not mistaken.
More amazing for me is the fact that first I’ve recognized the gate… just one very short image, seeing Catherine standing in front of the gate when she returned home alone from her journey, it was enough to bring back another ‘memorable’ image: Jane returning home also alone from her tentative elopement with Tom Lefroy.

Have anyone else seen this new adaptation yet?

mamma jakeline said...

Mariana, I also thought it looked very familiar! But after entering the gate, the path is not the same.

i loved the adaptation by the way! :-)

pS: Part 6 of I remember love is up! :)

Maria, it looks like I can join your ‘without a life’ club : -)

What book did you choose in the end? I hope you’ll pick Mansfield Park, especially if you never read it before. I love Fanny Price and I still don’t understand why some people did not like Patricia Rozema’s movie as much as I did. There is a little bit more of Jane’s life in this interpretation than in anything else that I‘ve seen so far. Loved it!

Hugs

Mariana. I am glad I am not the only one! ;) I have read Mansfield Park once before, many, many years ago (when I was like 15 or so). I remember it vaguely and I think I loved it. ;) I still have a few chapters in Emma left so... the choice remains!

Hugs

For the analysis of MP from Michelle and I, here we goes:

http://becomingjane.blogspot.com/search/label/Austen%27s%20books

For the house of Catherine and Jane, yes it's the very same Higginsbrook House:
http://becomingjane.blogspot.com/2007/07/confirmed-janes-and-catherines-houses.html

It's very interesting that they still found such a house to fit their purpose, in the inner Ireland!

mamma jakeline said...

(while reding the post on the house)"...including Mr. Austen’s library (which contained leather-bound books, all in Swedish!)." really?! Haha that is just so hilarious. But why books in swedish? Does anyone know? *curious Maria*

Ok back to my writing now! :)

Very interesting analysis! You and Michelle did a fantastic job with MP. Thank you for reminding me this way that I should take a look at the old postings.

Oh dear Icha, you and Team Jane have already picked soooooo many ‘bread crumbs’ from Jane’s books!!! Why didn’t I read your old postings before starting my researches????
Capital-Capital!

For a while I’ll keep quiet …just trying to catch up with you, dear friends, and digesting everything ‘discovered’ by others : -)

Lots of hugs

Icha said...

No worries, Mariana ^_^

I understand that looking at old posts is sometimes a bewildering task, if not tedious. But honestly, about the PP breadcrumbs that you picked afterwards, your excellent research adds to the only post Michelle and I made for PP a few months ago:

http://becomingjane.blogspot.com/2007/08/jane-bennetcharles-bingley-jane.html

Maria, good luck with the fanfic! Sorry I have not got the time to look into it. I'm doing the last lag of my research before going back to Oz, and I have dozens of to-do list beforehand. But am still watching here, and have a JA/TL post to submit if I have time this week (and can free myself from the guilt).

take care!

Michelle/Maria I didn’t ask you what do you think about the fact that Atonement received the Oscar nomination for Best Picture, but the person that contributed the most at its success, Joe Wright, did not?

How is that possible? All the other directors of movies that received nominations for best pictures have been also nominated.
How can a movie be The BEST without its director???? I’m disappointed…NO, I’m actually DISSSSGUSTED.

BEST PICTURE
Atonement
Juno
Michael Clayton
No Country for Old Men
There Will Be Blood

BEST DIRECTOR
Paul Thomas Anderson, There Will Be Blood
Joel and Ethan Coen, No Country for Old Men
Tony Gilroy, Michael Clayton
Jason Reitman, Juno
Julian Schnabel, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

mamma jakeline said...

Mariana, yes that is just plain wrong! While thinking about it I am starting to warm up to Atonement more and more. Guess I have to see it again. Think my infatuation with James is growing by the minute... *swooning*

Dearest Maria and Mariana (the name iteration is adorable!):

Maria: The same user has uploaded James McAvoy flick Starter for 10 also.

Rachel introduced Starter for Ten to me months ago, and I hunted it till the HMV UK. And got it, watched it, amazed by how cute and innocent James McAvoy can be in that movie. You guys should watch it if you can.

And Atonement is my next breakfast as I arrive back in Oz!

mamma jakeline said...

dear Icha, I just went to tanixmuller's account and it has been suspended. :( I have to find Starter for 10 elsewhere... I want to see EVERYTHING with James.

mamma jakeline said...

Ok, it's me, again! ;)

watched the trailer for Starter for 10 at amazon while just browsing around a bit. I am sure you have noticed that Dominic Cooper, starring Mr W in SS also is starring in Starter for 10! hehe...

I'm ordering the ITV Austen-box and Persuasion, comes rather cheap actually! :D (when comparing with prices in Sweden... and since I have not find any of the adaptations here yet... well Amazon is the place, right?)

ok. Bye for now! / maria

I did find Northanger Abbey and Mansfield Park at youtube again btw.

Oh sorry, it's me again... lovely clip with James about the Oscar nominee for Atonement. watch it here:

Icha said...

Maria, no, I didn't realise that Cooper was in Starter for Ten! Anyway, I don't really fancy him, so no matter. Who was he in S4-10?

I do recognise another great actor though, Benedict Cumberlain, I think, James' annoying senior in S4-10. He was also Prime Minister William Pitt in 'Amazing Grace', and boy, was he not so amazing there?! He was THE William Pitt, for sure, on par with Ioan Gruffudd's Wilberforce.

Icha said...

Oh - I meant Benedict CUMBERBATH, not Cumberlain :-D Sorry, Ben!

Yes Maria, there must be something wrong with the Academy. James is also a stunning omission, once again, after The Last King of Scotland… I’m speechless. Anyway, I think they all must be very pleased with BAFTA noms and the fact that Atonement received the Golden Globe.

Dearest Icha, I’ve already seen S4 10 on DVD. After ‘discovering’ James in Becoming Jane, I started to look for him in every movie : -)) and happily found the same charming, talented and extremely “pleasant young man, I assure you”. I must confess that although I liked him in other movies, with the role of Tom Lefroy, he will always have a special place in my heart.

James participated in a Roundtable Oscars discussion alongside other stars. If you’d like to read the article and watch the video, go to Newsweek.com

Icha, he played the part of Spencer. I have only seen the trailer as of yet, but will see the dvd soon. So I don't know how big of a part that is. ;) I have not really warmed to him either...

Mariana, I think it will be difficult for James to "be" anyone but Tom Lefroy. Once an Austen-Hero always an Austen-Hero!

Watch out for Penelope, it's coming to theaters in late Feburary!

/ love from Maria in Sweden who is very, very soon on her way to work! :)

Icha said...

Oh yeah, I remembered Spencer. A very annoying boy, friend of James' character. I remembered James yelled at him 'Spencer!' with such an adorable bariton voice when Spencer was about to hit Benedict. And he did, ended up in a messy fight!

mamma jakeline said...

icha, I am so looking forward to see it now! :-) Not because of Cooper, but our own James! :D
